She broke both her ankles at KC haunted house. Now she — and others — are suing

A Lincoln, Nebraska, woman filed a lawsuit last Tuesday against a popular Kansas City haunted house after allegedly breaking both her ankles at the attraction in 2021.

Leslie Blake is suing Full Moon Productions, which owns The Beast Haunted House, for negligence and recklessness, according to the lawsuit. She previously sued the haunted house in 2023 for the same incident, according to a Jackson County court document. That case was dismissed in October 2024.

The new lawsuit alleges that on Oct. 30, 2021, Blake visited The Beast in Kansas City’s historic West Bottoms, where she was “given permission to do the ‘Beast Jump,’” from the haunted house’s second-story window, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims that despite following all safety instructions given to her during the jump, Blake broke both of her ankles after landing on an inflatable air pad. She shattered multiple bones in her ankles, requiring surgery and “extensive therapy,” according to the lawsuit.

According to the lawsuit, the inflatable air pad was allegedly “under-inflated, not properly positioned” and “not properly supervised.”

The petition for damages claims Full Moon Productions should have known about “the dangerous conditions of the facility” because there have been “multiple” lawsuits filed against Full Moon Productions alleging patrons have been injured due to the jump.

The ‘Beast Jump’ is a feature no longer used at the attraction, a representative for Full Moon Productions told The Star in an email Monday. Further, they say the issue was not with their attraction, but instead contend the woman did not follow directions, despite having signed a waiver acknowledging the risks.

Multiple personal injury lawsuits have been filed against Full Moon Productions, which also owns The Edge of Hell and Macabre Cinema, over the years, according to Missouri court records.

Two other personal injury lawsuits are pending against Full Moon Productions, one of which also references the inflatable air pad at The Beast, according to a Jackson County court document.

The second suit revolves around a slide attraction at The Edge of Hell Haunted House, another attraction in the West Bottoms. In that case, a woman alleged she was injured after going down the slide, according to a Jackson County court document. The slide is lined with baby powder, and riders use a sheet of wax paper to increase speed.

Participants sign waiver before entering The Beast

The Beast, one of Full Moon Productions’ three attractions in the West Bottoms, was voted best haunted house in the nation in 2019 and was named among five legendary haunted houses in 2023 by America Haunts. They are being sued by a woman who says she broke both ankles at the attraction in 2021.

In a waiver of liability patrons sign before entering Full Moon Production’s attractions, posted on the company’s website, those who enter the haunted houses “waive and release all claims,” including personal injury claims arising from “alleged negligence of the haunted house interactive theatres, and/or their employees.”

The waiver acknowledges patrons at the company’s attractions assume risk, stating the environment has “certain, inherent, known and unknown, obvious or non-obvious risks,” including falling.

The bottom of the waiver says, “If you do not release and waive all liability of the parties identified in this section, you do not have permission to enter the haunted house interactive theatres.”

Additionally, patrons at the attraction must check in at a waiver station upon arrival at the haunted house, according to the The Beast’s website. There, they are recorded on video verifying they’ve reviewed the waiver.

Each of the haunted houses owned by Full Moon Productions, including The Beast Haunted House, The Edge of Hell Haunted House and The Macabre Cinema Haunted House, are inspected by an on-duty fire guard on a nightly basis, the company’s representative said.

The attractions also have security staff and emergency responders available during operational hours, and visitors are given instructions while navigating the houses to remain safe, the representative said.

Woman previously sued in 2023 for same allegations

In Blake’s dismissed 2023 case, Full Moon Productions alleged the woman signed the liability waiver on an on-site iPad, where she “had no issues with reading or reviewing the liability waiver,” according to a motion filed by Full Moon Productions asking the judge to dismiss the case.

Blake paid extra to do the jump, according to the motion.

Attorneys for Full Moon Productions alleged Blake did not follow instructions given by staff members when making the jump, according to the motion.

Staff at the attraction allegedly instructed her to land “bottom first” on the inflatable pad, with her feet facing forward, according to the motion.

Instead, the motion claims Blake landed “feet first, ‘like a pencil.’”

Blake and her counsel failed to respond to the motion and the case was dismissed in Oct. 2024, a Full Moon Productions representative told The Star in an email Thursday.

In response to the new lawsuit, “Full Moon Productions and The Beast Haunted House will file another Motion for Summary Judgment and anticipate that the case will once again be dismissed,” the representative said.

Blake is seeking a sum in excess of $75,000, according to the lawsuit.
