Car driving 100+ mph causes wreck on Highway 71, 2 people in critical condition
Two people were hospitalized with critical injuries after a car wreck on U.S. Highway 71 in Kansas City Thursday afternoon.
Around 3:45 p.m., a burgundy Honda Civic with two occupants was traveling more than 100 miles per hour northbound on Highway 71, just past Red Bridge in southern Kansas City, according toAlayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson with the Kansas City Police Department.
The driver was weaving between vehicles, passing too closely, and overcorrected the vehicle to avoid a collision, Gonzalez said in a press release. Upon avoiding vehicles, the Honda skidded sideways between the first lane and the emergency lane, and rolled at least three times, ejecting the driver.
Both people inside the vehicle were transported to a local hospital with critical injuries.
The DUI unit processed the scene, Gonzalez said, and the investigation remains active.
