Woman and dog killed in U.S. 24 Highway crash in Independence

A woman died hours after being hospitalized from a crash in north Independence, police said.

Officers responded to a reported crash around 8:13 p.m. Friday. According to a preliminary investigation, a woman was crossing U.S. 24 Highway with her dog from the north to the south.

As the woman was crossing the highway, a Nissan Versa driving east on U.S. 24 Highway collided with the woman and her dog, according to a news release.

The pedestrian, a 77-year-old woman from Independence, was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. She was later pronounced dead at 12:18 a.m., according to a police department spokesman.

The dog was also killed in the crash, police said.

The driver of the Nissan remained at the scene and was not injured in the crash, police said.

All lanes of U.S. 24 Highway were closed for just over two hours while crews cleared the scene and investigators gathered evidence.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
