Update: Police said Front Street has reopened after crews spent most of Friday morning cleaning the spill.

Two people are left injured after a crash involving two box trucks caused a fuel leak and fire, forcing a Kansas City road to close Friday morning.

Crews with the Kansas City Fire Department responded just before 4:30 a.m. to the 2500 block of Front Street, near North Olive Street and the Missouri River, on a call about a crash.

According to preliminary information from the KCFD, the crash involved two box trucks. One of the trucks ended up off the road and ruptured its fuel tanks, resulting in a fuel spill before the truck caught fire, said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, a fire department spokesperson.

The drivers of both box trucks were transported to a hospital for evaluation of what appeared to be minor injuries.

Hopkins said in an email at 5:42 a.m. that the fire department was able to get the fire under control. Crews requested a HAZMAT team to contain the fuel spill.

Front Street is closed in both directions as crews continue cleanup from the fuel spill. Hopkins said in an email that police estimate the road to remain closed in both directions for up to two hours.
