Power outages force Raymore Peculiar schools to close early Tuesday

Schools in the Raymore Peculiar School District are dismissing students early Tuesday as power outages affect building operations.

On the district’s first day of school Tuesday, Ray-Pec High School, South Middle School, Ray-Pec Academy, and LEAD Center will have early dismissals.

According to a post on the district’s Facebook page, power outages were affecting air conditioning, phones, internet, cafeterias and safety systems.

The post said students who drove to school were being dismissed just after 9:30 a.m. and bus riders would be dismissed shortly after.

“Parents may pick up students using normal procedures,” the Facebook post said.

“Please expect delays as we work to ensure a safe dismissal,” the district said. “Huge thanks to our students, staff and families for your patience and positivity on this unexpected first day!”

Short-lived thunderstorms brought heavy rain, winds and lighting to the Kansas City metro Tuesday morning, which caused about 20,000 Evergy customers to lose power. As of 10:20 a.m., that number had decreased to just over 8,000 customers without power.

In Cass County, where the district’s schools reside, there were 197 customers without power as of 10:30 a.m., an Evergy outage map shows.
