Swope park hosted the 46th annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival on Saturday. Even with temperatures feeling like they were close to 100 degrees, thousands packed the event to celebrate the diverse communities that make up the Kansas City metropolitan area. More than 60 countries were represented at the festival.
There was plenty of food to sample at the festival. Vendors sold spicy dishes traditional to their countries like Jamaican jerk chicken and tacos from Mexico and the not-so-spicy, like raclette, a dish traditional to Switzerland, where molten cheese from a wheel of raclette cheese is poured over potatoes and other foods.
New to the festival’s food booth collection this year was a stand representing Palestine. The Palestinian community had been represented in the parade of nations and in dancing in previous years but this year was the first time visitors to the event could get a taste of traditional Palestinian food.
Music, dancing and fashion are always a big part of the event. Despite the sweltering temperatures, dancers still donned several layers of clothing for their outfits traditional to their cultures and performed ceremonial dances.
Dressed in layers of blue, gold and orange, women representing some of the culture of India performed classical Bharatnatyam dances known for intricate footwork and expressive gesture. The men who represented Somoan culture may have been dressed more appropriately for the day’s heat as they performed traditional Polynesian dances while shirtless.
The festival started on Friday and continues Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at the Swope Park bandstand at 4177 Pavilion Road. Tickets are $5 for adults. Children under 12 are free with an adult.
