- Weather Service urges hydration, shade and neighbor checks through weekend.
- Relief expected midweek as storms and a cold front drop temps closer to normal.
Hotter-than-normal temperatures and muggy air will turn the weekend into a sweat-soaked struggle for anyone venturing outdoors in the Kansas City area, the National Weather Service said.
“Mother Nature isn’t going to let you forget it is still summer!” the weather service said.
Temperatures and humidity will begin to increase on Thursday, reaching the upper 80s which is pretty typical for mid-August in the metro.
But the real heat wave hits in full force on Friday, the weather service said, and sticks around through the weekend.
Temperatures will be in the low to mid-90s Friday through Sunday, with heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees, and may even top out at 107 degrees on Saturday.
The weather service currently thinks that heat index won’t get high enough for a heat advisory, especially since it’s late in the summer. However, Saturday is the day most likely to reach those dangerous levels.
During periods of extreme heat, the weather service advises people to drink plenty of water, limit time outdoors during peak heat, and check on neighbors and pets.
Looking for relief? KC has to wait until next week
There is no relief from the heat until early next week, the weather service said.
The next chance for rain arrives on Monday, but the better chance for storms will arrive Tuesday, the weather service said.
Even so, expect another hot day on Monday, with temperatures in the low to mid-90s. Tuesday’s storms should cool things off to around 90.
By Wednesday, a cold front is expected to move through the area, bringing more seasonable temperatures and a break from the summer sizzle.
