One dog died in a house fire after another dog started the blaze in the kitchen of an Overland Park home.

Firefighters from the Overland Park, Shawnee and Lenexa fire departments responded to a fire at West 82nd and Hadley streets around 10 a.m. Thursday, according to a press release from Overland Park Fire Department Media Manager Jason Rhodes.

Initial reports indicate the fire started when a dog attempting to retrieve dog treats from a stovetop inadvertently bumped a burner, Rhodes said. The residents were not home at the time.

Four dogs and two rabbits were retrieved from the home, Rhodes said. One of the dogs later died.

Two adults and one child, as well as the animals, are displaced by the fire.
