Man charged with felonies, accused of stabbing Shawnee police dog during standoff

Prosecutors have charged a man with three felonies, after he was accused of stabbing a Shawnee police dog over the weekend.

Edwin Perez, 26, was charged with counts of aggravated robbery, interference with law enforcement and harming a police dog in Wyandotte County District Court Thursday.

Officer T.J. Tomasic, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department, said officers were summoned to the 900 block of Riverview Avenue Aug. 5 after a call about a disturbance.

A person at the scene told police a family member had returned to a residence there after an assault with a knife earlier in the evening. When police approached, a man allegedly barricaded himself in a home.

A Shawnee police dog, or K9, was brought to the scene to assist, and when officers went into the home to arrest the man, the dog was stabbed, Tomasic said. The K9 was taken to an area veterinarian and was expected to make a full recovery.

The man eventually surrendered to law enforcement.

“We are grateful that K9 Dagger is expected to make a full recovery,” Shawnee police said on Facebook. “He is a valued member of our team, and we appreciate the support and well wishes as he continues to heal.”
