Former student sues Park University after 2020 dorm assault
A former Park University student filed a lawsuit against the Parkville school July 30 after she was allegedly assaulted in an on-campus residence in 2020.
The woman brings the suit forth on one count of negligence, according to the lawsuit.
On March 24, 2020, the woman was a resident at an on-campus residence, according to the lawsuit. An individual, not identified in the lawsuit, allegedly entered the residence through an unlocked or propped-open door.
The individual did not live at the residence, according to the lawsuit. The person allegedly went to the woman’s room and attacked her, causing “permanent and long-lasting injuries to her eye and face.”
The attacker was not asked for identification or proof of residence before making their way to the woman’s room, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit claims the university failed to implement safety measures in the building that would have prevented “unwanted visitors,” and did not train employees to address unwanted visitors. Additionally, the doors of the building were “regularly propped open.”
The woman is seeking a damages in excess of $25,000, according to the lawsuit.
In a statement, Brad Biles, senior director of communications for Park University, said: “Park University is aware of the allegations; however, the University does not comment on matters involving pending or ongoing litigation. We remain committed to fostering a safe environment for all students, including those that live on campus.”
The suit is not the first filed in relation to the incident, according to a Platte County court document.
In 2022, the woman filed a similar lawsuit against the university and the woman who allegedly assaulted her.
According to a “statement of facts” document filed in 2022 by Park University’s lawyer, the woman had had previous altercations with her alleged attacker. The document claims the plaintiff never told officials at the university that she wanted the woman to stay away from her.
Additionally, the plaintiff allegedly allowed the attacker into her room. The lawsuit was dismissed in May 2025.
