Western Wyandotte County to see new entertainment venue in time for the World Cup
The home of Sporting Kansas City is gearing up for renovations that would outfit the soccer stadium to host additional live entertainment events. Construction may begin as soon as this fall and could be completed in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Kansas City, Kansas’s Children’s Mercy Park — in partnership with architecture firm Populous and Turner Construction — is building a 90,000 square-foot outdoor plaza to host concerts, game-day fun and other community events, said Rob Thomson, Sporting KC’s spokesperson in an email.
Sporting KC as of last week had not formally announced its project, although details were included in documents for a recent Planning Commission meeting held by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and KCK.
The plaza will feature a stage and video board, new entry gates, a “Champions Walk” sidewalk entry, and new lighting, Thomson said. It will be suited to host up to 9,000 people for such events, provided the government approves a submitted special-use permit.
Should construction move along smoothly, the project may come to completion next May — just in time for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Kansas City metro is scheduled to host a series of games next summer, and local governments are readying their communities to welcome the hundreds of thousands of anticipated visitors from across the globe.
Renovations to the complex are common, Thomson said, adding that they upgraded it with LED lights and videoboards going into this season, introduced its Field Club before that and regularly conducts stadium upkeep.
“The fan experience is paramount for Sporting Kansas City. We take great pride in our stadium, keeping it pristine, and enhancing fan-facing areas,” he said. “... We envision activity on match days, for community events and World Cup watch parties, where visitors around the world will come to Kansas City.”
