The building at Broadway Boulevard and 37th Street was added to Kansas City’s dangerous buildings list on Monday, the day after the collapse.
What is considered a dangerous building?
Kansas City defines a dangerous building as a structure with defects that are “detrimental to the life, health, property, safety or welfare of the public, or its occupants are endangered.”
The city code lists examples, including “substantial damage or deterioration” to walls or roof, irreparable damage to the electrical or plumbing system, or issues with the structure so that the building is “likely to partially or completely collapse.”
How can you report a dangerous building?
If you believe there is a dangerous building in your area, reach out to Kansas City’s 311 service, said Lanè Johnson, city spokesperson. You can call 816-513-1313 or use the myKCMO app or website.
Under the Property Violations category, you can submit a description of the property issues and you add photos. According to the app, property owners are responsible for fixing violations.
A 311 representative told The Star that an inspector is supposed comes out to see the property within 10 days of a report.
You can receive updates on the status of your report if you include your name. If you submit an anonymous report, you can check on the 311 map or submit a request for an update online or on the app to see the progress.
