Cass County homes evacuated after fireworks found in home of deceased chemist
People were evacuated near a home in the small Cass County city of Strasburg Tuesday after a large batch of fireworks were found in the home of a deceased chemist, law enforcement said.
All roads near the 400 block of Mill Street in Strasburg were blocked off, said Ronnie Lozano, a spokesman for the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Bomb squads from the Lee’s Summit and Independence police departments were called in to assist with the situation.
Materials found in the home included old nitrate, which is commonly used for fireworks, and larger display fireworks, known as Class B fireworks, Lozano said.
The initial call that brought first responders to the scene came in at 11:30 a.m., Lozano said. The home had belonged to a retired chemist who had died, and family members who were going through the home called when they discovered the items in the home, Lozano said.
One Strasburg resident told The Star in a message she lived near the home and left the area after law enforcement recommended she evacuate. When she left, law enforcement had blocked the routes into town, she said.
