Kansas City apartment caught fire while residents were sleeping Thursday morning

An occupied two-story apartment building near the intersection of Prospect Avenue and 30th Street caught fire early Thursday morning affecting 10 people, according to a release from the Kansas City Fire Department.

The KCFD arrived at the Justin Place Apartments in the 2700 block of E 30th Street at 3:45 a.m. after receiving notice of a fire and smoke.

Multiple hoses were used to extinguish the flames from the inside, and the fire was brought under control at about 4:30 a.m.

Some residents were inside the apartment when the fire started. One occupant was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. Firefighters searched the structure and reported no other injuries.

In total, seven adults and three children were impacted and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

The cause of fire is currently under investigation.
