Kansas City veterans center breaks ground on new park to honor military vets

A Kansas City veterans organization has broken ground on a new park intended to honor veterans of military service.

St. Michael’s Veterans Center, a nonprofit organization that provides affordable housing to veterans who are homeless or disabled in the Kansas City area, held a ceremony Friday to kick off construction of Patriot Park. The park is being constructed on the grounds of the veterans center at 3818 Chelsea Drive.

The park at the entrance of St. Michael’s is only a block away from the Kansas City VA Medical Center. St. Michael’s executive director Susan Engel said she sees the space as an important gathering place for the city.

“It’s really going to be a landmark for our campus and our city,” Engel said. “A gathering place to remember military veterans and reflect on what that service means for them and the country.”
