Some protest guides suggest activists wear a mask or face coverings to conceal their identities.

In addition to protecting against sprayed substances and airborne viruses, Wired’s protest safety guide says that “face coverings also have the benefit of shielding your identity from cameras and police surveillance.”

Demonstrators in Missouri could encounter increased law enforcement presence. On Thursday, Gov. Mike Kehoe activated the Missouri National Guard, saying a “State of Emergency exists in the State of Missouri due to civil unrest.”

Despite the assertion of civil unrest, there has been no evidence of violent protests in the state.

Recently, demonstrators on both sides of the political spectrum have obscured their identities with face coverings at Kansas City area marches.

Some people at the Tuesday “Shut Down ICE” march in Kansas City wore masks as they marched from the West Side to Liberty Memorial.

Last month, members of the white nationalist Patriot Front group walked through downtown wearing sunglasses and face coverings.
