The 10th annual Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival kicks off in Overland Park Thursday, offering attendees free classes, quilt exhibits and more throughout the weekend.

Located in the Overland Park Convention Center, quilters from across the Midwest will gather at the festival to celebrate their passion for their craft.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Quilting Journeys,” paying tribute to the Midwest’s quilting heritage, according to the festival’s showbook.

Over 700 quilts will be on display at the event, showcasing “work from acclaimed artists and rising stars alike.”

There will also be a Guild Quilt Exhibit, displaying quilts made by 17 regional quilt guilds. A quilt guild is a community of people that quilts together. Guilds involved in the event include the Eudora Quilt Guild, Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild and the Olathe Quilter’s Guild.

When attendees are done checking out the quilts, they can head over to the vendor booths, where vendors from across the country will sell fabric, tools, patterns and more. Over 130 vendors will be present at the event, according to its website.

Demonstrations and classes will also be offered throughout the weekend.

Demonstrations are free with a ticket, but some classes require an extra fee for materials and to pay the instructor. Demonstrations include 360 degree designs, wool applique and French braid quilting. Classes, which range from $30 to $240, teach certain quilting techniques. Participants can register for classes online through Friday or in-person at the festival.

Those interested can buy single day tickets or a three ticket bundle. After Wednesday, tickets must be bought in-person.
