Kansas City man charged with murder in fatal Wabash Avenue shooting
A Kansas City man is facing murder charges after a shooting in Kansas City’s Key Coalition neighborhood over the weekend.
The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office announced felony charges against Shawn Allen Jr. on Wednesday, according to a news release from director of communications Jazzlyn Johnson.
Allen will face one felony count each of second-degree murder, discharge/shoot firearm at or from a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm and two counts of armed criminal action, according to a warrant for Allen’s arrest.
If convicted, Allen could face more than 30 years in prison, according to the news release.
Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 2900 block of Wabash Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. There, they found Javonie E. Minor, 31, with gunshot wounds.
Minor was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to a probable cause statement for Allen’s arrest.
A witness told officers she had been involved in an argument with Allen earlier that night and left, according to the probable cause statement. She allegedly had planned to buy marijuana from Minor.
The witness was inside the residence playing with Minor’s puppies when Allen began to call her, according to the probable cause statement. Allen allegedly told her he was going to “shoot up” the residence.
When the woman started to leave the residence, Allen allegedly charged toward it with a gun, saying, “What did you say? What did you say?” He then fired four rounds into the front door, the statement said.
The witness ran to her vehicle and hid as Allen allegedly fled the scene, an account corroborated by a passer-by, according to the probable cause statement.
Video surveillance aided in identifying Allen, according to the probable cause statement.
Minor’s death is Kansas City’s 69th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star. Further court dates are not set in Allen’s case, according to court documents.
