Bomb and arson unit investigating South KC apartment fire, officials say
An investigation continues into a Sunday night fire in South Kansas City at the Coach House apartments on Holmes Road that displaced residents from up to ten units, according to fire department officials.
Eight to ten units of the building on the 11500 block of Holmes Road were damaged in the blaze, according to Michael Hopkins, a spokesperson with the Kansas City Fire Department.
One resident was transported to the hospital for “non-fire related issues.” The Kansas City Police Bomb and Arson Unit was called to the scene and is actively investigating the incident.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross made contact with five people on scene, according to Sharon Watson, Regional Communications Director for the American Red Cross of Missouri and Arkansas. She said ten units were damaged during the fire.
“We are working to reach out to everyone in those units that we haven’t yet spoken with, and we also are asking anyone who was impacted by the fire to call 1-800-Red-Cross if they have not yet spoken with a Red Cross team member,” Watson said in an email.
Kansas City police spokesperson Officer Alayna Gonzalez said the department could not comment on “specific details” surrounding the fire. As of June 3, the investigation is ongoing, said Captain Jake Becchina, a police department spokesperson.
Earlier in the evening, a vacant and reportedly under-construction Coach House apartment building located at 11213 McGee also caught fire. KCPD Bomb and Arson is also investigating that fire due to the building’s structure and nature, Hopkins said.
Coach House Apartment management declined to comment on the fires.
