Six officers fired at suspect during KCK shooting, KBI says
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Monday in Kansas City, Kansas, leaving one man hospitalized, according to a press release from the KBI.
Kansas City, Kansas police officers responded to a storage unit at 235 North 78th Street around 2:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a domestic incident, according to the release.
There, officers attempted to make contact with 41-year-old Timothy Cella, who police could see through an exterior window in the storage unit, the KBI said in the release.
As officers commanded Cella to exit the storage unit, the man made verbal threats towards officers, according to the release. Officers “believed Cella pointed a firearm at them,” and additional law enforcement was called to the scene.
The object Cella pointed at officers was later located at the scene, and is believed to be a butane torch, the KBI said in the release.
At 3:45 a.m., Cella again raised “what was believed to be a firearm at officers,” the release said. Six officers discharged their firearms, striking Cella “multiple times.”
Cella was transported to an area hospital, where he remains in critical, but stable condition, according to the KBI’s press release.
The KBI will continue to investigate the incident.
