Summer reading programs are kicking off in libraries across the Kansas City area, giving readers the opportunity to win prizes, get free books and attend unique events.

Five library systems throughout the Kansas City area are hosting their own summer reading program. Each program is a little different, but most follow the same theme: Color our World. Chosen by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, which is a nonprofit organization that promotes reading and library use, the theme celebrates how art enriches life.

According to the Johnson County Library’s website, this theme also celebrates the area’s diverse communities.

The Mid-Continent Public Library, which serves residents in Clay, Jackson and Platte counties, has its own theme: Blank Canvas. Like Color our World, this theme also encourages the creation of art and creativity.

From parties in parks to hikes through Kansas City, readers of all ages can participate in the various programs and events offered at the libraries.
