See Memorial Day fireworks that lit up the sky for Celebration at the Station

It’s hard to top the percussive power of “The 1812 Overture” but the fireworks Sunday night at Celebration at the Station rivaled the cannon fire that’s part of the classical piece.

The annual Memorial Day celebration, with music provided by the Kansas City Symphony, packed in a crowd that filled the seats in front of the bandstand at Union Station and covered the north lawn of the National WWI Museum and Memorial. The day started with a steady rain that threatened to quiet the show but cleared out in the afternoon soon enough for event organizers to give it the go ahead.

Patriotic tunes from the symphony, sometimes with vocal accompaniment, led up to Tchaikovsky’s overture, complete with blasting cannons, to usher in more blasts from a fireworks show that lit up the sky over the Liberty Memorial tower.

Here are photos from Sunday’s Celebration at the Station.
