One person is dead after an apartment fire in Kansas City Monday morning, which authorities are calling suspicious.

Firefighters arrived at the 4000 block of State Line Road just before 9 a.m. to find smoke and fire coming from the second floor of a two-story home converted to apartments, according to Michael Hopkins, spokesperson for the Kansas City Fire Department.

Officials searched the building after hearing a person might be inside, and found the victim deceased.

The Kansas City Police Department’s bomb and arson unit were called due to both the suspicious nature of the fire and the death, and will continue to investigate, according to Hopkins.
