Law enforcement recovered a Corvette stolen from a Waldo street at an auto shop in Independence, where investigators also found stolen items and drugs, a spokesman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

Investigators found the vehicle at a business in the 10200 block of U.S. Highway 40 in Independence using an aftermarket tracking device, said Cpl. Justin Ewing. Kansas City police, Independence police and a state patrol SWAT team executed a search warrant there on May 9, and the Corvette was recovered, he said.

A large amount of drugs was also seized at the site, and one person who had an outstanding warrant was arrested, Ewing said.

Ewing said stolen auto parts were also found at the site, but said he couldn’t confirm what knowledge the owner of the business had of the stolen Corvette or if the owner had any direct tie to the theft or shooting in Waldo.

Residents of the Waldo neighborhood where the car was stolen in April told The Star of two incidents over a week in which a group sprayed gunfire at homes and then returned to steal the Corvette a few days later. They said the group fired shots at the homes when a resident interrupted the group as they were prowling vehicles on their street early one morning and returned a week later, again armed with guns, and stole the Corvette off its owner’s driveway.

Suspects in the shooting have not yet been identified, according to law enforcement.

Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said detectives are continuing to investigate the incident and are making headway in identifying a subject of interest.
