Buildings in Kansas City’s Westside South neighborhood were evacuated Thursday afternoon after a work crew struck a natural gas line, the Kansas City Fire Department said.

First responders were called to the intersection of West 24th Street and Southwest Boulevard around 1:30 p.m. on a reported gas line rupture and found a four-inch line had been hit during digging operations, Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins said.

Several buildings in the area were evacuated as a precaution, he said.

Around 3:30 p.m., he said Spire had controlled the leak, and occupants of the evacuated buildings were allowed back in those structures.

Traffic may be disrupted in the area Thursday afternoon as Spire completes repairs on the gas line, he said.
