Join our exclusive ‘birds-eye view’ of Kansas City Zoo on new thrill ride

Thrill seekers will soon be able to flock to the skies over the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium on its newest ride, Flying Flamingo.

The exciting new attraction, opening to the public on April 25, lifts a maximum of four riders on a seated zipline, reaching a height of 100 feet in the air. It glides riders over the area between Sobela Ocean Aquarium and Elephant Expedition to give riders a rarely experienced birds-eye view of the Zoo and Swope Park.

Riders must be at least 50” tall to ride alone. Those 42”-49” tall will need an accompanying adult, meaning the ride is primarily for preteens, teenagers and thrill seekers of the appropriate height and age.

Media and social media influencers were invited to a preview of the ride on Thursday the day before the ride opened to the rest of the public.

“It was fun. It was faster than I thought, great views at the top,” said Mikita Watson, a social media director in Kansas City.

Though it doesn’t look all that high from the ground, once you get taken into the skies, you truly appreciate how high you are and the unprecedented view of the area you get the chance to take in.

That view is short lived. After about five seconds, you are whisked back down the zipline at speeds up to 30 mph. Definitely not break neck speed, but coupled with the height, well fast enough to feel exhilaration for a few minutes.

All flights will require a timed reservation, which guests can make on the day of their visit at Guest Relations, Membership Services, World Gate, Africa Market, or the Flying Flamingo kiosk. Premier Friends of the Zoo members will enjoy the Flying Flamingo for free but will still need to make a timed reservation.

For all other guests, a single flight is $8 or double your fun with two flights for $15.
