Longtime Independence council member Lucy Young resigns
Lucy Young, an at-large member of the Independence City Council, has resigned.
Mayor Don Reimal said Young cited health reasons.
“I don’t know what the situation is,” Reimal said.
“I consider her a good friend. We respect her decision, and we are here to support her and keep her in our prayers.”
Young said in an email that serving as council member had been a pleasure, adding, “I would like to thank the citizens for their support and wish the community of Independence Godspeed.”
Jane Sharon, Independence city clerk, said she is awaiting direction from the city council for filling Young’s seat.
Young had served about 10 years as an at-large council representative. First elected in 1998, she lost a re-election bid in 2002 but won in 2006 with 29 percent of the vote, the largest percentage among four candidates.
Voters re-elected Young in 2010.
