Multi-city police chase ends in fiery highway crash after officers disable tires

A multi-city police chase ended in a crash on a Kansas City highway when police officers disabled the suspect’s tires during the pursuit.

The crash took place on Interstate 70 near the westbound exit to The Paseo, according to live traffic video maintained by the city. Sugar Creek, Missouri, police officers began chasing a woman in a car on Interstate 435 Monday afternoon, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a Kansas City Police Department spokesperson.

The chase, which took place at high speed, crossed into Kansas City and moved onto I-70 Westbound, where KCPD officers became involved by “using a tire deflation device” on the woman’s vehicle, Gonzalez said.

After her tires were compromised, the woman tried to slow down and exit onto The Paseo, but lost control, at which point her car rolled over, Gonzalez said. The woman was transported to a local hospital, where her current condition is unknown.

Feeds from KC Scout cameras, maintained jointly by the Kansas and Missouri Departments of Transportation, showed fire crews responding to a crashed vehicle around 1 p.m. Monday afternoon.

The exit in question closed for several hours Monday after the crash, according to KC Scout. Three lanes also closed temporarily as a result, KC Scout cameras showed.

When asked about reports that the crash was related to police activity beginning in another jurisdiction, a Kansas City Police Department spokesperson said that the department is still waiting on a report confirming the cause of the incident.

The highway had reopened by about 2:35 p.m., according to KC Scout feeds.

More than 320 people have been injured in police chases across the Kansas City metro in the last five years, a nine-month Star investigation found last year.
