Three City Hall veterans are finalists to replace Brian Platt as Kansas City Manager.

Mayor Quinton Lucas made the announcement after a closed meeting of the City Council Thursday afternoon. In addition to Acting City Manager Kimiko Gilmore, the other finalists are Assistant City Manager Mario Vasquez and Pat Klein, a former assistant city manager who retired two years ago after overseeing construction of the new terminal at Kansas City International Airport while serving as director of the aviation department.

Vasquez is the city’s director of planning and development. As deputy assistant city manager, Gilmore was director of the convention and entertainment facilties.

In a unanimous vote, the council fired Platt last month after a jury awarded former city communications director Chris Hernandez $930,000 after he alleged in a lawsuit that Platt had told him he saw no reason not to lie to the news media.

The council will interview the finalists at a public session on May 1. Lucas began accepting applications on April 4. Wednesday was the deadline to apply. He said more than 40 people applied for the job.
