A new hotel could be coming to Kansas City along the Missouri Riverfront near Bally’s Casino.

True North Hotel Group has announced plans for a new SpringHill Suites by Marriott hotel on what is now a parking lot just east of the Bond Bridge, across the highway from CPKC Stadium. Early plans show the hotel would be five stories and have about 120 rooms.

The City Council’s transportation committee voted on Tuesday to advance a plan that would use revenue from a 1% sales tax on the casino and future hotel to offset some of the hotel’s construction costs. The city owns the property and leases it to the Port Authority of Kansas City, which will sublease the land for the hotel.

There would be a $4.9 million cap on revenue flowing to the hotel project, according to information presented at the meeting. The new tax district, which is projected to bring in about $16 million, would last 25 years and additional funds would be used for improvements in the Berkley Riverfront area.

Chris Harlow, vice president of business development at True North, told the committee that the offset is needed for costs related to the poor soil condition of the area and rising construction costs.

Further details about the hotel’s construction are to be announced. The City Council would need to vote for final approval of the sales tax plan at a later date.

The hotel is one of several developments along Kansas City’s riverfront in recent years as the area transforms from a literal dumping ground into a full-fledged neighborhood and residential district.

Officials broke ground in March on a project to bring hundreds of new apartments, space for new businesses and a promenade to the Berkley Riverfront area in what will be a $1 billion investment. Other recent new developments include the stadium for the KC Current soccer team.

There are SpringHill Suites hotels in Country Club Plaza, near Worlds of Fun, by the airport, off Mission Road in Overland Park, near Costco in Overland Park and in Lenexa.
