Firefighters douse blaze that gutted home on Kansas City’s East Side

Kansas City firefighters extinguished a blaze that did significant damage to a home near the intersection of East 26th Street and Norton Avenue Tuesday morning.

Crews were called to the 2600 block of Norton Avenue around 9:45 a.m. and found heavy fire when they arrived, said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins with the Kansas City Fire Department. Fire crews moved in to fight the blaze, but were forced to evacuate because of the fire conditions, he said.

The fire was under control by about 10:15 a.m., Hopkins said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and a search of the building came back all clear, Hopkins said. One dog was rescued.

The department is investigating the cause of the blaze.
