Children’s Mercy launches $152 million expansion of Overland Park hospital campus
Children’s Mercy Hospital has announced a nine-figure expansion of its Overland Park campus.
The hospital announced in a Thursday news release that the first phase of a $152 million expansion plan is underway at Children’s Mercy Hospital Kansas, starting with an expansion of surgical services. That includes renovating the sterile processing department and adding space for pre-operation, post-operation and procedural care.
Adding new procedure rooms and expanding facilities will allow the hospital to meet growing demand for services in specialities like ear, nose and throat, orthopedics and gastroenterology, according to the release. Construction will be complete by summer 2026.
Future expansion work will include:
A new medical office building to consolidate outpatient services that are currently scattered. The new building is scheduled to open in summer 2027.
Hospital renovations and upgrades to spaces vacated by the consolidation of outpatient services that are scheduled to be complete by summer 2029.
Adding new programs, including inpatient rehab, intensive outpatient programs, an expanded gastrointestinal motility program and a neuroscience center of excellence.
Parking upgrades and exterior improvements to improve wayfinding and accessibility. Parking and emergency services will remain accessible during construction.
Alejandro Quiroga, CEO and president of Children’s Mercy, said in a statement that the expansion will allow for more families to have access to world-class care closer to home at Kansas’ only freestanding pediatric hospital.
“We’re really excited about this project because it shows how dedicated we are to giving the best care possible to our community,” Quiroga said. “By bringing all our outpatient services together, improving our hospital facilities, and creating a modern, connected campus, we’re making sure we can meet the growing needs of patients and families in the region.”
Children’s Mercy also announced plans in March for a new clinic in Wichita to expand services there.
The system has locations offering health care services across the Kansas City metro area and in St. Joseph, Springfield, Joplin, Topeka, Wichita, Junction City and Great Bend.
