Bicyclist in critical condition after hit-and-run crash in Independence, police say

One person was seriously injured when a driver allegedly hit a bicyclist at an Independence intersection Wednesday night.

Officers responded around 8:45 p.m. to 23rd Street and Lee’s Summit Road. A preliminary investigation shows a driver of a Ford Focus traveling east struck the bicyclist, according to a news release.

The bicyclist suffered serious injuries in the crash and is in critical condition at a hospital, police said in the news release.

The driver of the Ford Focus initially left the scene, then later called dispatch to report their involvement, the release said.

Police did not provide an age or gender of the victim.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Independence Police Department at (816) 325-7300.
