A south Kansas City apartment building was boarded up Monday morning after an inspection last week found several fire code violations and cited “unlivable conditions.”

Nearly 100 people were relocated over the weekend after the Kansas City Fire Department conducted an annual inspection at the Cloverleaf Apartments at 14554 US-71 Hwy, according to fire department officials.

“The decision to close the property for fire code violations along with health concerns is not a decision the Kansas City Fire Department took lightly, but one that was made with compassion and life safety as the driving force,” said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

“The unfortunate and tragic situation the residents found themselves living in was no fault of their own, but that of a negligent property owner,” he said.

Finding no property management team was only their first problem, according to a KCFD news release. The buildings had multiple fire violations and were in an overall condition the fire department referred to as “deplorable and unsustainable” in the news release.

Cloverleaf was shut down Friday and tenants were given the weekend to move out.

Leumas, an agency working on behalf of the Department of Housing and Urban Development counted 76 legal tenants and relocated them to both temporary and permanent housing. The 20 not on Leumas’ list were given resources through the city to relocate, though many relocated themselves, according to the release.

The Kansas City Police Department did a sweep of the property Monday morning before boarding up the building and shutting off utilities.
