Egg prices are skyrocketing because of the ongoing bird flu outbreak across the United States, and Kansas City grocery stores aren’t excluded from the costs.

The price for a dozen large, grade-A eggs in the United States averaged $4.95 in January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s higher than the $4.82 per dozen record set in January 2023.

The United States Department of Agriculture says egg prices are expected to increase far more than other foods in 2025. The USDA’s 2025 Food Price Outlook predicts that egg prices will rise more than 20% this year, compared to the roughly 2% increase they predict for food prices overall.

In a survey done of Kansas City stores on Friday, Feb. 28, the food item was widely available at stores in the city. But signs were placed all over some of the sections, limiting customers to one 12-pack per purchase or warning customers of limited options because of the outbreak.

“Due to the Bird Flu pandemic, we are unable to receive most of our usual egg variety selection at this time,” a sign said at Sun Fresh in Westport. “It has also affected the price of eggs.”

The sign also says, “sorry for an inconvenience,” in all capital letters.
