Kansas City police fired shots at a man after he pointed a weapon at them during a response to a disturbance call Thursday morning, a police department spokeswoman said.

Police responded around 8 a.m. to a residence in the 3200 block of Brooklyn Avenue on a disturbance call, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Responding officers heard the sounds of an argument between a man and a woman behind a home and found a man armed with a handgun, she said.

The man allegedly pointed the weapon at officers, who responded by firing shots at him, Gonzalez said. The man retreated out of their view, and the woman and her dog were evacuated from the area.

Police surrounded an apartment and called for tactical officers and trained negotiators. As of early afternoon, Gonzalez said police were attempting to take the man into custody and provide him with any necessary medical care.

Around 4:30 p.m., Gonzalez said tactical officers searched the area and did not find the man. No injuries had been reported as of that time, she said.

“That individual was not located, however our investigators will be working diligently to identify and locate the male involved,” she said.
