Western Kansas crash kills three members of Lee’s Summit family
Three members of a Lee’s Summit family were killed Tuesday in a traffic accident on I-70 in western Kansas, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Three children survived.
The crash occurred about 11 a.m. when the family’s 2003 Chevrolet Suburban rolled over on I-70 in Gove County, more than 300 miles west of Kansas City.
The driver, Mark A. Groom, 56, along with his wife Margaret K. Groom, 56, and family member Richard E. Nieweg, 85, died.
Three childen in the vehicle survived. Brody and Jake Groom, both 6, and Lilly Groom, 10, were transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
The Suburban was traveling west on I-70 when the driver cut off another vehicle for unknown reasons and swerved to the right and left, according to the patrol.
The vehicle then spun around, crossing both westbound lanes of traffic before rolling multiple times and coming to rest on the driver’s side in the median.
