Sheriff’s deputies in rural Linn County, Kansas, found two children dead in an icy lake Monday, according to a news release.

Deputies responded around 8 p.m. to the Lake Chaparral community on a report of two missing children who had not been seen for several hours. The Linn County Fire Department joined the search, and evidence led investigators to believe the children had been around the lake.

The Sheriff’s Office used a drone to search above the water and found the two missing children deceased, trapped under an icy portion of the lake, according to a news release.

The Overland Park Fire Department dive team assisted in recovering the bodies.

The Sheriff’s Department has not yet publicly identified the victims, or released their ages.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to family and friends that have been affected by this tragedy,” the Linn County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Lake Chaparral is a private gated community in rural Linn County. Property owners have access to the private lake, located within the subdivision.

The community is about an hour south of Kansas City.
