Kansas City man sentenced in shooting of police officer during traffic stop
A Kansas City man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after shooting a Kansas City police officer in the arm during a traffic stop last year.
Dwayne A. Barnes, 42, pleaded guilty to six felonies — two counts each of unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and second-degree assault — in the April 8, 2024 shooting.
Barnes also initially faced two additional counts of armed criminal action and one count of resisting arrest.
Two officers with the Kansas City Police Department had pulled Barnes over around 10:18 p.m. near East 46th Street and Benton Boulevard for having expired tags, according to court documents. The officers wrestled Barnes to the ground after he allegedly pulled away while they attempted to handcuff him.
Barnes then got up and shot one of the officers in the elbow, firing a second round before officers brought him to the ground again.
According to court documents, the officers who arrested Barnes allege that he appeared to be under the influence, and that Barnes had concealed his gun under his shirt before shooting at the officer.
The officer’s injuries were not life-threatening.
