The weather is shaping up to be great for a football championship game in late January in Kansas City, according to the National Weather Service.

Although Sunday got off to a chilly start temperatures will rebound to 34 degrees in the afternoon. That’s just five degrees shy of the average of 39 degrees for this date.

By the 5:30 p.m. kick-off of the AFC Championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills, temperatures will have fallen to around freezing.

“High pressure will settle over the area this evening, keeping wind light and leading to little or no wind chill — ideal conditions for outdoor gathers or spirited activities,” the weather service said on Facebook.

A closer look at Sunday’s temperatures in Kansas City

While temperatures will be on the chilly side, they will not be as extreme as last weekend’s AFC playoff game — temperatures were in the lower 20s with wind chills ranging from the single digits to the lower teens.

Fans will still need to dress for late-January weather in Kansas City, according to the weather service. Temperatures dipped to 19 degrees at Kansas City International Airport, with the wind chill making it feel more like 12 degrees.

By 10 a.m., temperatures are expected to climb to around 26 degrees in Kansas City.

The temperatures at Arrowhead Stadium will be 32 degrees by the time the parking lots open at 1 p.m., and they will warm to around 33 degrees by the time the stadium gates open at 3:30 p.m.

Throughout the game, temperatures will slowly drop, falling to around 27 degrees around 9 p.m.

Warmer temperatures bring elevated fire concerns for Kansas City

Next week, temperatures will rise above what is typically seen this time of year, according to the weather service.

Temperatures will reach the mid-40s on Monday. Low humidity and winds gusting up to the mid-20s could lead to elevated fire concerns, especially in northeastern Missouri.

Temperatures are expected to reach around 50 degrees on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The next chance for precipitation returns late Thursday and continues through Saturday. Temperatures, however, favor rain with only slight chances for wintry precipitation.

There is less than a 25% chance of measurable snow.
