Some Kansas City area schools opt to delay, cancel school Tuesday due to cold weather

Some school systems around the Kansas City metro are delaying or canceling school Tuesday, as forecasts call for extreme cold temperatures and bitter wind chills.

A cold weather advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Monday until noon Tuesday, with temperatures expected to be at or below zero in the morning, according to the National Weather Service-Kansas City, which is also calling for wind chill values ranging from 10 to 25 degrees below zero.

The following school systems have announced plans to delay the start of school or cancel in-person class:

  • Blue Valley Schools will operate on a two-hour delay.
  • Belton School District canceled in-person instruction, and will use their fifth AMI distance-learning day.
  • Center School District will be closed Tuesday.
  • Leavenworth USD 453 will operate on a two-hour delay.
  • Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay, and early childhood centers will be canceled.
  • Kansas City Public Schools canceled in-person instruction, and will hold an AMI Day, with students learning from home.
  • Kearney School District will operate on a two-hour delay.
  • Olathe Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay.
  • Park Hill Schools will operate on a two-hour delay.
  • Pleasant Hill Schools canceled in-person instruction, and will have an AMI virtual learning day.
  • Smithville School District will operate on a two-hour delay.
  • Spring Hill Schools will operate on a two-hour delay.
  • Unified School District 232 will operate on a two-hour delay
