A former Olathe teacher pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct Friday after allegedly coercing a student into having sexual relations inside his home.

Micah Horton, 36, who taught choir at Olathe North High School, was charged with two counts of unlawful sexual relations. While working as the school’s vocal director, Horton exchanged messages of a sexual nature with three female students via Snapchat, according to court documents.

Horton pursued one of the students further in late 2023, coercing her to send him explicit photos and “make out” with him on school grounds, according to court documents. The student visited Horton’s Shawnee home on three separate occasions, where he ultimately coerced her to engage in oral sex, according to court documents.

The Olathe school board fired Horton in February 2024 before referring the investigation to law enforcement.

Horton joined the Olathe school district in 2021. In 2023, the district voted him secondary school teacher of the year.

Horton previously pleaded not guilty in July 2024 to an initial charge of felony sexual exploitation of a child. A jury trial had been scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Jan. 22, prior to his guilty plea.

Horton is being held on a $500,000 bond. His sentencing hearing will be at 9 a.m. March 28.
