A 93-year-old woman died after she was struck by a car near an intersection in Independence Saturday evening, a police spokesman said.

The victim was identified as Sophia Machajewski of Independence, said Sgt. Jeff Buck with the Independence Police Department’s traffic safety unit.

Police responded to the crash shortly after 6 p.m. on Lee’s Summit Road near the intersection of East 38th Street, Buck said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a driver of a Toyota Avalon was traveling north on Lee’s Summit Road and struck Machajewski near the intersection, Buck said. Machajewski lived in the area, and it is unknown why she was in the street.

The driver of the Avalon was not injured and was cooperating with the investigation, Buck said.

The crash remains under investigation by the police department’s crash investigation unit.
