Four firefighters and two other people were injured in a house fire Sunday morning east of Kansas City in Sugar Creek, firefighters said.

The Sugar Creek Fire Department was called around 7:30 a.m. to the area of South Forest Street and Henry Avenue, where victims were reported trapped inside a burning house. The responding rescue crew then called the Independence Fire Department for aid, according to an Independence Fire Department news release.

Firefighters were told one victim had escaped, but another was still inside. During the rescue, four Independence firefighters were injured. One was treated on scene, and three others were taken to an area hospital with burn injuries, according to the release.

Of the three firefighters taken to the hospital, one had a shoulder injury, along with his burns, and was released. The other two were expected to be released later Sunday.

The two other people injured were also taken to an area hospital, where one is listed in critical condition.

Officials said the cause of fire is still under investigation.
