Kansas City man allegedly stabbed dog, killed puppy during home robbery: Court documents
A Kansas City man faces multiple charges after allegedly stabbing a dog and killing a puppy while attempting to rob his father’s house early Thursday morning.
Christopher Cervantes, 29, has been charged with stealing, property damage and two counts of harassment.
Police responded to the alleged killing and theft at a house on the 400 block of Spruce Avenue, in the South Indian Mound neighborhood of Kansas City, around 9:34 a.m. Thursday. The homeowner, Cervante’s father, told investigators his son did not live in the home but had stayed there the night before, according to court documents.
Cervantes’ father noted that when he left for work around 5 a.m., Cervantes was wide awake and seemed not to have slept, according to court documents. Cervantes’ father’s wife also noted that Cervantes was awake when she awoke, and was allegedly talking about wanting to kill the family dogs.
When his father’s wife left to take the couple’s children to school, Cervantes allegedly kicked in the basement door, stabbed and hit 3-year-old pitbull Nina several times, and left with the family’s puppy Kilo, as well as several household items.
Kilo’s body was discovered in a vacant lot near the home shortly after the incident with severe trauma to his body, according to court documents.
When she returned home after school drop-off, Cervantes’ father’s wife discovered a large quantity of blood and bloody paw prints around Nina’s kennel, according to court documents. According to court documents, Nina had suffered stab wounds to the shoulder, ribs and head.
Along with damage to the basement door valued at about $600, Cervantes allegedly stole a lawn mower, a dolly and several tools, collectively worth about $800, according to court documents.
Cervantes, who his father described as a known drug user, allegedly told police that he had become angry with the dogs and that he had intended to kill Kilo, the puppy. He allegedly admitted to stabbing Nina, the pitbull, in the head with a screwdriver after stepping on Kilo’s head multiple times.
Cervantes also allegedly told police he had intended to sell the lawn mower, dolly and tools to purchase methamphetamine, according to court documents.
Cervantes has not been charged with animal cruelty as of Friday afternoon. He is not eligible for bond, and his next court date has not yet been set.
