One dead after car flips on Independence highway: Police
Update: The deceased has been identified as Hunter Fisher, 24, of Pettis County, Missouri.
One person died in a car accident in Independence on Thursday when the car they were in flipped while attempting to pass another vehicle.
The fatal crash took place around 12:55 p.m. on Little Blue Parkway, south of E Truman Road, according to Independence Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Jeff Buckley. A 2005 GMC Envoy was driving southbound when the driver allegedly tried to pass another car and lost control of the vehicle, Buckley said.
The Envoy flipped onto its back, ejecting two riders and hitting another car, according to Buckley. One of the occupants of the flipped Envoy died. That person has not been publicly identified.
The driver of the other car, who was its only occupant, was not injured.
The Independence Police Department is still investigating the crash, according to Buckley.
Across Missouri, 61 fatal traffic accidents have involved flipped vehicles since the beginning of 2024, according to data collected by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Of all fatal crashes in the state this year, about 8% have involved a flipped vehicle.
