Freezing drizzle possible in the region. Will it warm up enough so KC sees only rain?

Cold air will linger across area leading to the possibility of freezing drizzle for areas north of a line from Kansas City’s Northland to Kirksville, Missouri, according to the National Weather Service. Northern Missouri is at a greater risk of seeing the freezing drizzle.

Cold air will linger in the Kansas City area preventing temperatures from rising much above freezing on Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

A warm front over central Kansas expanded eastward overnight and will try to move north, but cold dense air across the upper Midwest is slowing it down, the weather service said in its forecast discussion. This will lead to lower temperatures across the region, except for some in the southern part of the forecast area.

Kansas City’s daytime temperatures will be in the mid-30s, falling to the low 20s and teens. At this time of year, Kansas City’s average daytime temperatures are typically in the low 40s. The average overnight temperature drops to the mid-20s.

Slick road conditions possible in northern Missouri

The metro area will see another cold start to the day on Friday.

“Cold air across the region Friday morning will retreat, but may not be quick enough leading to the potential for a period of freezing drizzle Friday afternoon-evening,” the weather service said.

The weather service said the most likely locations for freezing drizzle are north of a line from Kansas City’s Northland to Kirksville, Missouri.

“The question is whether the surface temperatures will warm above freezing before the drizzle develops,” the weather service said.

The accumulating freezing rain or drizzle will occur between noon and 6 p.m. Friday. The weather service said it will transition to rain or drizzle as temperatures warm Friday night and early Saturday morning.

In Kansas City, temperatures are expected to rise above freezing around noon and into the low 40s by the afternoon. Overnight temperatures will remain around 40 degrees.

Rainfall totals over half an inch is possible east of Kansas City.

Rainy start to the weekend in Kansas City

The chance of rain continues into Saturday morning before the skies clear, becoming mostly sunny.

Although a slight chance of rain continues, temperatures will rise to the low 50s in the afternoon. They tumble back into the mid-30s overnight.

Mostly sunny skies are forecast for Sunday, with temperatures around 52 degrees.

A weather system will likely bring additional rain to the region Sunday night into Monday, but it will end at midday as a cold front slides through the area. More seasonal and drier conditions are expected in the middle of next week.
