Students and staff at Van Horn High School in Independence had to pause class and evacuate into the auditorium Wednesday morning after workers on the roof reported a fire.

The fire was believed to have originated from an air conditioning unit on the roof of the high school building at 1109 S Arlington Ave, which lead to smoke in the old gym, according to an email Megan Murphy, director of public relations for the Independence School District, sent to parents.

It was quickly put out by the Independence Fire Department.

Students have since returned to class or lunch, except those attending PE in the old gym at the time of the fire and the Industrial Arts students, whose classrooms are on that side of the building, the school district said.
