Teen charged after allegedly bringing gun to Shawnee Mission South High School
A 15-year-old student faces three charges after he allegedly brought a gun to Shawnee Mission South High School, causing a brief lockdown Monday.
The teen was charged with one count of firearm possession by a felon, one count of juvenile in possession of a firearm and one count of interference with a law enforcement officer, the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.
The district attorney’s office said the teen was scheduled to make an initial appearance in court Tuesday afternoon.
Overland Park police were called to the school Monday after the student showed the gun to friends, police said. Another student reported the weapon to an administrator, and officers took the teen into custody.
The school was briefly placed on lockdown status.
No shots were fired during the incident, though initial correspondence from the scene mistakenly included reports of gunfire, police said.
