Here are 5 neighborhoods and houses with extravagant holiday light shows in Kansas City
Kansas City’s been merry and bright during December, as Christmas draws closer. Holiday light displays are set up across the metro, themed pop-up bars are in full swing and a new festival has taken over Crown Center. And Independence was in the spotlight with “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story,” the Hallmark movie released in November that was filmed in its historic square, as well as Arrowhead Stadium.
Neighborhoods around Kansas City are also infected with the holiday spirit, and you can find hundreds of houses decorated with Christmas lights and blow-up figures of Santa Claus. In some areas, it’s harder to find a house that isn’t decorated.
Most of the displays listed here can be enjoyed from your car, but a few have the option to sit, stand outside your car or walk around. All of these are free for anyone to look, but a few do ask for donations from visitors.
Take a look at a few Kansas City neighborhood holiday light displays. We will be updating the list throughout the holiday season. If there are any neighborhood displays you think should be highlighted, email us at kcq@kcstar.com.
Cedar Creek
The Cedar Creek neighborhood in Olathe, found at South Cedar Niles Boulevard and West 108th Terrace, has a cul-de-sac made up of 15 homes, all with unique Christmas displays. Some of the images you can find are a grandma getting run over by a reindeer and a display honoring the movie “Die Hard,” which counts as a Christmas movie in some people’s eyes.
Christmas Place
The Overland Park residential area near West 131st Place and Antioch Road earned the nickname Christmas Place for its vibrant Christmas light shows. The 23-home neighborhood invites all to drive through until Christmas to see what they have on display.
The neighborhood has a tourist attraction designation on Google Maps.
Kustom Christmas Lights
Kustom Christmas Lights is a residence located in the Carriage Hills neighborhood, and the owners welcome all to see their light show from now until Tuesday, Dec. 31. The display is on from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Be sure to turn your radio station to 90.7 FM before you visit the residence at Northeast 60th Court and North Spruce Avenue in Kansas City. Visitors on Fridays and Chiefs game days can hear additional Chiefs-related songs at the end of the show.
Ward Parkway
Driving on either side of Ward Parkway alone gives you a sneak peek at some of the Christmas decorations set up by homeowners in the Mission Hills area. Take a pick on which street you want to view and drive through the neighborhood.
Romany Road gained some attention in 2023 for its Kansas City Chiefs-themed light displays. Residents on the street united to decorate their homes in red and yellow as they welcomed visitors through the area.
Uncle Roger’s Holiday Spirit Lights Up The Night!
The house at 15367 S. Greenwood St. in Olathe puts on light shows every day, with over 50 lights sequences equipped to sync up to songs playing on 90.5 FM radio.
The owners call the display Uncle Roger’s Holiday Spirit Lights Up The Night! as a tribute to their uncle who died in 2016 and invite visitors to see the light show from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Visitors can donate to the owner’s Venmo account, @Donald-Duran, to support the show.
